A long way from Maui, talking about the cameras these pictures are made with.

About

I have been photographing on Maui and around the world for more than twenty-five years, and the personal work has quietly become the part I care most about.

I hold a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree in Physics from the University of California, San Diego, and am also an FAA Gold Seal Certified Flight Instructor with over 15,000 hours of experience. I still think about light in wavelengths, and about a filter as a decision over which of them reach the sensor.

The pictures here are made on a Leica M11 Monochrom, a Leica MP for film, an M9, an M11, a Q3 43 and a Q2 Monochrom. A long interest in Kodachrome sits underneath most of the colour work; the aim is not nostalgia but a specific density and restraint that modern files give up too easily.

Lighting in the portrait work comes from looking at Renaissance painting far more than at other photographs. The motion and long-exposure frames owe their thinking to the Impressionists — what a picture keeps when it stops trying to hold everything still.

I also make films about all of it — cameras, emulsions, and the places the work happens — for an audience of around twelve thousand on YouTube.

A print of the Molokai sea cliffs is held in the Leica Archives. I work as an ambassador for Oberwerth, OwlKrown and House of 35, and travel worldwide by request.
